Planning for a fulfilling career: how it’s possible with the right guidance and knowledge

Work is core part of our everyday life. That’s why it’s important to get it right and find a career that makes sense.

We know that during our working lives, circumstances are bound to change and because of this, many people further on in their careers aren’t happy in their jobs as they no longer suit their lifestyle or reflect their current needs. The result? Older people leaving the workforce or changing employment entirely.

It’s not uncommon to get to a point where a role is no longer fulfilling, making early retirement feel like the only option. In reality there are plenty of opportunities to adjust a role, develop skills and even change careers completely to create a longer, better working life. At Phoenix Group we believe that better career support (no matter your age, seniority or experience level) makes for a sustainable, successful and satisfying working life.

Recent research has revealed that changing job or career feels risky for many people as they’re often unaware of the support that is available to help them make these important decisions. That’s why our longevity think tank Phoenix Insights is working to bridge the knowledge gap to help individuals make transformative career choices.

Planning for a revamped career

This is hugely important, as research shows that in the post-pandemic period those aged 50-plus who retired early and stopped working completely did so largely due to negative attitudes towards employment and work not fitting with other priorities. The research also highlighted that women in particular are receptive to receiving help to ‘de-risk’ big life changes. Your career should work for you, but many workers find the prospect of making career changes daunting and often don’t know where to begin.

We want to help address these problems by giving people access to better careers information and advice that can equip and empower people to plan and make changes to their careers.

Empowering change

The truth is that many people feel lacking in support and information to make positive career choices, often not knowing what changes are available and the impacts they will have. That’s why we are on a mission to help more people feel empowered to make meaningful career changes because we believe this is a key, but often overlooked, enabler in helping people improve, enjoy and extend their working lives.

Having enriching employment that makes you feel valued is only going to become more important as the qualifying age for the state pension rises. A revision to the Pensions Act 2014 means that everyone born after 6 April 1960 will have a state pension age of 67, with the changes being phased between 2026 and 2028.  A longer working life is now a reality – but knowing how to use that to have both a satisfying career and help prepare for a satisfying retirement is the key to success.

A rewarding future

We know that progress is possible; over the last decade, young people in education have started to receive valuable careers guidance, but there’s still not enough being done for Generation X around career changes. Phoenix Insights is taking proactive steps to help, working with a range of partners such as Squiggly Careers, Brave Starts, Careershifters, Enterprise Nation, Now Teach, Women Returners, Learning & Work Institute and Postcards from Midlife Live. We are showcasing that careers can change and pointing people to where they can get help.

Bridging the savings gap

More than two thirds of UK 50–64-year-olds don’t know how much they'll need for retirement, which coupled with a rising state pension age means the decision to retire early is not one to be taken lightly. If individuals are supported to seek out changes to their career, they can not only reduce their future savings gap but also optimise their job satisfaction and they can then more effectively plan for retirement.

As an employer, we always want our teams to learn and grow which is why we’re running careers workshops for our colleagues, and we’re now on a mission to take this one step further and inspire the UK’s workforce to make important changes to their career.

Our aim: to inspire people to see that careers can change successfully, to help people feel supported to make informed choices about career changes and to promote and connect people to great services. With longer working lives ahead of us, let’s make sure they’re as successful and fulfilling as possible.

Careers Can Change

Our Careers can change campaign shows people, particularly those in midlife, that their careers can change successfully, whether that’s making a small shift or a total pivot.

The objectives of the campaign are to:

  • Inspire people to see that their careers can change successfully, and in many different ways
  • Encourage more people to actively manage their careers throughout their working lives
  • Connect people to great information, support, and organisations that can help them
