Better Society Awards

Phoenix Group, the UK’s largest long-term savings and retirement business, won Impact Company of the Year at the Better Society Awards.

The award recognises the Group’s commitment to setting ambitious climate-related targets, as well as creating a diverse and inclusive workplace for all. The Better Society Awards, now in their eighth year, celebrate the efforts of businesses to create a better society.

Phoenix aims to help people secure a life of possibilities, which drives everything the business does.  It looks to make a real difference to its customer’s financial futures, supporting them on their journey to and through retirement, while helping to drive a low-carbon, fair and more secure future.

This has led to the business developing a Sustainability Strategy that focuses on three pillars and ensures the business embeds sustainability into every corner of its operations:

  • Investing in a sustainable future: As a steward of £0.3tn in assets, Phoenix drives positive action by focusing on how and where it invests. It has committed to being net-zero in its investment portfolio  by 2050 or sooner, and has set ambitious interim targets for 2025 and 2030.
  • Engaging people in better financial futures: Phoenix is focused on helping people make informed financial decisions, improving financial inclusion and has a pioneering vulnerable customer strategy.
  • Building a responsible business: Creating a diverse and inclusive workplace in which colleagues are engaged and empowered is important to Phoenix Group, as is championing sustainability throughout its operations and supply chain and supporting society’s most vulnerable through strategic community partnerships. Phoenix Group has also been recognised by “Inspiring Workplaces” featuring in their top 50 inspiring workplaces in EMEA.
James Wilde, Chief Sustainability Officer at Phoenix Group, comments:

“It’s fantastic to see the work we’ve been doing over the past year recognised as we seek to help our customers, communities and colleagues secure a life of possibilities.

“The impact of our work in 2022 has been immediate and far reaching, with colleague advocacy at an all-time high, being on track to meet or exceed our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion targets as well as working to reduce our emissions year on year to meet our target of net-zero emissions in our operations by 2025, alongside reducing the carbon intensity of our investment portfolio.

“We know that targets mean very little without measurement which is why progress is monitored, and steered, by our Board-level Sustainability Committee. We look to be transparent,, publishing our annual sustainability strategy which outlines the progress we are making against our targets.”
